Digital Synergy, Inc. (DSI) is a software consulting company that provides software support services and application development for OpenVMS on Itanium, Alpha or Vax systems. We also provide Suse Linux system support on Intel processors.

We specialize in secure Internet data access solutions and have developed secure web services that meet the new standards for on-line credit card processing.

We also provide application migration services from Vax and Alpha to Itanium. In addition we have successfully converted many other systems to OpenVMS.

The newest addition to our development system is a framework that allows Java applications and Web users to efficiently access OpenVMS RMS databases and existing applications without the overhead and limitations of converting the data to a relational model or a major software rewrite.

System Support

OpenVMS Health Check

The OpenVMS Health Check is a set of DCL command procedures that collects data on the overall tuning and load of an OpenVMS system. It generally is run for a week and takes .2 to .3 percent cpu. The results are collected into text files which are then sent to DSI. We analyze this information and return both a written analysis of the system and a set of graphs detailing the performance.

This data can be used as a "second opinion" to ensure that a system is properly tuned. It can also provide the basis for assessing the current system capacity when considering a hardware or software upgrade or starting a migration project.

Postscript Programming

DSI provides custom postscript programming for OpenVMS, Linux/Unix and other environments.

Electronic Forms have the following benefits:

  • Eliminates the cost of pre-printing and storing forms
  • Data on forms always aligns as both form and data are printed at the same time
  • Forms can be easily updated eliminating wasted stock
  • The form itself can be dynamic based on the data

We also have many years of experience in on-demand and variable data digital printing. This allows the creation of documents (for example catalogs) directly from a database. This means the documents will be up to date when printed based on database information without recurring typesetting charges.

Web Development

We specialize in creating customer to business and business to business web services.

You can reduce customer service and connectivity costs by giving your customers or business partners secure access to data via the Internet. Data can be accessed by connecting web pages using HTML/JavaScript or Java Swing applications to VMS RMS databases and existing applications using FastCGI and our Java-to-RMS connector.

Migration Services

DSI has in-house Itanium OpenVMS systems for migration, development and benchmarking. We are also an authorized Itanium reseller for systems sold with Linux.

An Itanium system is an industry standard 64 bit RISC processor developed by Intel that can run OpenVMS, Unix, Linux or that virus compatible OS.

Benefits Of Using an Itanium

  • New Itanium systems can be both cheaper and faster than a used Alpha.
  • Operating costs can be greatly reduced. (Electricity, air conditioning and maintenance)
  • Itanium OpenVMS systems all include TCPIP services and an unlimited user license at no extra cost
  • Many Alpha applications can be ported to an Itanium in a matter of hours.

As an example of the cost/benefit of migrating to Itanium, a cluster consisting of an ES40 and an AlphaServer 1000 was replaced by two single processor RX2620 Itanium systems. The total cost of the new Itanium's with three years of software and hardware maintenance was almost equal to just the hardware and software maintenance costs on the Alpha systems for the same three years.

This upgrade resulted in almost 5 times the cpu performance and, due to more memory and better caching, most batch jobs ran over twice as fast.
